Howie & Julia
10.30-12.30PM | Assembly Hall
Julia Taudevin & Howie Reeve will co-facilate a workshop for GSA students which will explore personal perspectives as creative practitioners within today’s current social and political climate. Using drama techniques, and applying some methods from Augusto Boal, the aim of the workshop will be to help participants orientate and focus within a sometimes perplexing cultural environment. It is not always easy to be a creative practitioner today and for each person this path and intention will be different: areas explored may include the relationship between art and career, and the role of the artist within society. There is no right or wrong, this workshop merely seeks to raise questions for the participants in order to assist towards a degree of clarity in terms of one’s own practice and perceived trajectory. The workshop will last around 90 minutes.
1.30-3PM | Project Room
DIY Bother? Do-It-Yourself as a (Radical) Utopian Space
Andy Abbott will give a presentation about his journey as an artist, musician and researcher operating within and alongside various DIY scenes and projects in West Yorkshire: as a member of the band That Fucking Tank, running a bedroom record label and music collective called Obscene Baby Auction, through the artist collective Black Dogs and as an individual artist, as a steering group member for various organisations including Art In Unusual Spaces, Leeds Creative Timebank and Wharf Chambers Co-operative Club, and as director of independent music and arts festivals Bradford Threadfest and RECON. Andy’s talk highlights the problems, obstacles, difficulties and challenges encountered through these activities and projects – not to undermine their value but as an attempt to reframe DIY as an experimental and exploratory space for testing and producing subjects capable of thinking within, against and beyond capitalism.
The presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion.
3-5.30PM | Assembly Hall
I watched as my teacher’s pens used his overhead projector.
Using transparent and semi-transparent materials, we (as a group and individually) will find ways of creating works which will be projected out using an overhead projector. These pieces will then form the basis and trunk of performances, where other sources can be brought along for the ride, as backseat drivers or shotgun. Please feel free to bring existing work you wish to develop, or dive into something new.
In the evening we shall be transparent together, enjoying each others shadows as they block out the light – brightly.
Elizabeth & Howie Reeve
8pm | Assembly Hall
Following on from a day of workshops and discussions with GSA students concerning DIY culture and personal orientation as artists and designers, Andy Abbott (That Fucking Tank and Nope) will play a set in his solo guise of Elizabeth, joined by Glasgow’s own Howie Reeve. Both are ardent advocates of DIY practice as musicians and human beings. Malcy Duff and collaborators will also present a short projected performance.
